Al-Fustat Revival

Project Vision

“Working as part of the team at Hampikian, help maintain the excavation of the original city of Al-Fustat so visitors and future archaeologists can engage with it directly, and design the surrounding park to tell the story of Cairo — from Al-Fustat to the New Administrative Capital.”

Urban development and conservation of the archaeological section of al-Fustat. Park design with miniature monuments, entertainment area, food court and interpretation panels — delivered together with the team at Hampikian for Architecture & Heritage Management.

Al-Fustat is where Cairo begins. The project brief was not to over-build, but to frame: keep the excavation exposed and legible, and use the ring of land around it to tell the thousand-year story of the city.

The masterplan threads a visitor from the entrance through a miniature park of Historic Cairo (domes, minarets, Mamluk portals at scale), past interpretation panels displaying the most significant artefacts found on-site, into an entertainment area with a food court, and out onto a promenade along Tilal Al-Fustat.

On the architectural documentation side, monuments were modelled by starting from site visits, photographing the elements, tracing 2D drawings from the photographs and then building the 3D model. The Qaitbay Mosque dome, for instance, yielded a geometric + organic pattern system; Ruqaya Dudu Dome yielded a cenotaph, columnar calligraphy and the surrounding composition.
